About
The Hollows Golf Club
The master plan at The Hollows is now complete. The golf facility, located
about 20 miles northwest of Richmond in
Montpelier, opened its first nine in 1984.
Two years later a second nine was introduced. A third nine came on line in 1996.
And a new clubhouse made its debut in 1998.
The original course (Lake/Road nines) is long and open on the front side and
increasingly tighter on the back. The White Pines and Leyland Cypress trees
planted along the fairways back in the mid-80s are just now starting to mature,
and can affect shots that drift too far left or right. The new Cottage course is
much tighter and demanding. All three courses can be mixed and matched.
There are a number of very good holes at The Hollows, but none are as
beautiful as the 347-yard, par-4 second on the Lake course. The fairway
traverses an 18-acre lake on the left. Towering hardwoods frame the fairway to
the right and green from the rear. Bring your cameras in the fall! Just don't
let the waterfowl and largemouth bass in the shallows distract you when playing
your approach over the water.
Two holes on the Cottage Nine deserve special mention. The first is the par-3
third hole. From the white tees it's only 138 yards, from the blue tees it's 196
yards, but from either tee it's one of
the most demanding iron shots around. The tee ball must carry water to a small
green bunkered on all sides. Take two balls with you
just in case.
The second is the 406-yard, par-4 fifth hole. A solid tee shot here sets up a
difficult approach to a heavily bunkered green tucked into the woods.
Out-of-bounds markers line the entire right side of the hole.
While all three nines emphasize accuracy over length, big drives can set up
some very easy approaches. And, as course founder Tommy Pollard suggested, "bring your best short game and your ego will certainly get a
boost."
